The Mid-Michigan Chapter sponsors pathfinder disabled youth and veteran hunts every year. We contribute to veteran pheasant hunts at both Crooked Foot in Owosso, MI and Tails-a-Waggin' in Marion, MI. These two pheasant hunts are open to veterans (and first responders at Tails-a-Waggin') to participate in a hunt and interact with other veterans, first responders and the volunteer guides.
We are also very active in the Sportsmen Against Hunger Program, providing funds to assist with the cost of processing donated deer, Gordon’s Food Service gift cards to organizations for their needs and also make cash donations to provide food through the Greater Lansing Food Bank to area organizations.
We support many education efforts throughout the year. Local school teachers are selected to attend the American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS) in Jackson Hole, WY. This training gives teachers a broad background in outdoor activities including biology, ecology, fishing, archery, and hunting. The North American Hunting Model is taught as part of the curriculum. We provide grants to support local high school trap teams. We also provide some funding to the Isabella County Sportsman’s Club to help provide a good safe shooting location for both youths and adults. A donation to the Card Wildlife Museum at Ferris State University each year along with our multi-year support of Potter Park Zoo are other examples of the Chapter’s education involvement.
The Chapter puts on six membership meetings per year, where members can come together for dinner and to hear about hunts that members have taken and hear from various outfitters, along with the opportunity to get to know other members and have a chance at a door prize. We also have a youth gun drawing each month for an attending youth under 18. We also have our yearly fundraiser in February, with a “members only” event taking place on Friday night.
Membership in the Chapter includes a subscription to our top-notch magazine, the Front Sight, which is published four times a year. This magazine includes write ups of member hunting adventures, information on activities that the Chapter takes part in, book reviews, and recipes, among other items.
